Tom Dixon's recent adventures in hotel, restaurants, bar and office design got him looking for a chair to withstand heavy use, constant knocks and the daily abuse of the professional world. But he also wanted a recognisable silhouette, an ergonomic shape and a modern attitude.

Not too much to ask. But after much fruitless searching Tom Dixon decided it was time to make their own. Two years of complex engineering and intense shape-making later they came up with the Y Chair. The Y Chair's expressive form is injection moulded in glass-reinforced nylon which is extremely fatigue resistant - absorbing shock and load through its flexibility and tested to contract level.

The shape of the Y chair is prompted by ergonomics – with lumbar support, space for the spine and a generous brace for the shoulder blades. All adding to its instantly recognisable silhouette.

Shell
The textured nylon shell is available in both black and white. Custom colours are available for volume orders.

Bases
The Sled base is made of steel and suitable for occasional outdoor use; available in black or white powder coat and will stack to a maximum of 8 units. The Swivel base is made of sand-blasted aluminium and is available in clear lacquer or black powder coat. The Wood base is made of natural oak and is available with a clear lacquer or black stain. A copper-plated stretcher completes the base. All options come with nylon feet.

Upholstery
The Y chair is also available upholstered with either a seat pad or a seat & back pad. The upholstery is made from thermo compressed foam covered with Kvadrat Divina Melange 2 fabric, affixed to the shell with industrial adhesive.

Environment
The Y chair can be easily dismantled and is 100% recyclable. The chairs have been tested for general contract use and are suitable for the following applications: Office buildings, showrooms, public halls, function rooms, cafés, restaurants, canteens, banks, bars and the home.
