America is in a sleep crisis. An estimated 50 to 75 million Americans suffer from a disorder of sleep and wakefulness. Inventors Eli Lazar and Matthew Snyder understood this all too well, as they used to run a fan at night. They realized that people wanted the noise of the fan, but not necessarily the cold air blowing on them. That sparked the idea for SNOOZ. While there are plenty of gadgets to track sleep disturbances, SNOOZ wants to make sure you can actually do something about it.

A 2008 Consumer Reports analysis of 2,021 problem sleepers found sound machines to be more helpful than more effective than over-the-counter sleep aids. SNOOZ is effective because white noise reduces the delta between the baseline sound of a room and contaminant noise. Many sounds are masked and the rest aren't as startling. Designed with airflow simulations run on supercomputers, SNOOZ uses a proprietary fan to generate live, natural white noise that is adjustable and doesn't disturb the surrounding air. There are no looping tracks or low-quality speakers. Just the soothing sound of moving air.

Other benefits of SNOOZ include that both the tone and volume can be adjusted, a smartphone app offers remote control and additional functionality, and SNOOZ is 98 percent more energy efficient than a box fan. Fans are designed to move air and engineers try to minimize the sound they make. As a result, the decision was made to design the opposite; to design a fan to create sound, but minimize air movement."

Parents that want their little ones to sleep soundly will also benefit from SNOOZ since the product is kid friendly. Studies have shown that babies are three times more likely to fall asleep when exposed to white noise. However, a 2014 study by the University of Toronto looked at 14 popular infant sleep machines and found that every single one was capable of producing sound levels that exceeded the limits set for hospital nurseries. To address this, SNOOZ is the first white noise machine to be accompanied by a nursery calibration feature to make sure the sound level is safe for your little one.
